Welcome to the Central Business District Neighbourhood of Saskatoon
Formerly called West Saskatoon, downtown Saskatoon formed when the steam engines built their pumping stations on the lower west bank of the South Saskatchewan River. The recent development of train station back then, attracted retail stores that popped up around the newly created train station and rail yards. Today, the city of Saskatoon’s Central Business District has the Midtown Plaza and many locally owned boutiques and offices.
The area is home to approximately 3,200 residents, with over 75% of those residents being renters and the majority of dwellings being multi-family or apartment/condominium buildings.
The downtown improvements have been continuous since the original removal of the CNR yards in the 1950’s/1960’s and landmarks like the Centennial Auditorium/TCU Place and Hudson’s Bay popped up. Today, restaurants, retail, office buildings, high-rise apartment buildings like the 2nd Avenue Lofts, nightclubs, and recently Persephone Theatre, River Landing, and the Remai Art Gallery have become the anchors of the downtown core.
